I left Kaunas at the age of 19 and never missed it much, but for several years now this city has been a source of inspiration and admiration for me (and occasional frustration, too). These five things can brighten a painfully familiar walk around the city.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>1. The life-size sculpture of famous interwar singer Danielius Dolskis is always adorned with seasonal flowers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4811 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy3.jpg\" alt=\"kaunas-cozy3\" width=\"659\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy3-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy3-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It brightens a walk down the main pedestrian street, Laisv\u0117s al\u0117ja.<\/p>\n<p>Dolskis\u2032s final resting place seems to be the only grave at Kaunas\u2032 old Jewish cemetery that is attended and taken care of.<\/p>\n<p>2. When people rush to the old town as soon as the sun comes out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4815 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy2.jpg\" alt=\"kaunas-cozy2\" width=\"641\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy2-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy2-768x559.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Depending on whether you visit on a sunny or on a rainy day, you will leave with a completely different impression.<\/p>\n<p>3. Ever-changing restaurant landscape. This is evident for people who eat out in Kaunas less frequently. Just this month I heard of two new Indian places opening. Food fashions in Vilnius are always viral to the point of causing boredom, but businesses in Kaunas follow a very different pace. Everyone makes burgers and it\u2032s boring, but today I had a Hare-Krishna-style soya burger with mustard and it was probably the best that I\u2032ve had in Kaunas. I guess the frequent changes spell bad news for business &#8211; it means that businesses close down easily and can hardly sustain themselves. But it is more interesting for consumers this way.<\/p>\n<p>4. Grocery kiosks<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4817 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy5.jpg\" alt=\"kaunas-cozy5\" width=\"650\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy5.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.daivarepeckaite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/kaunas-cozy5-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because why not buy some apples on the street, on the way from work?<\/p>\n<p>5.
